Justice Kurian sworn in as CJ of HP high court

Shimla: Justice Kurian Joseph was sworn in as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court at the Raj Bhawan here today. Himachal Pradesh Governor Urmila Singh administered the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Joseph. Officiating chief secretary Harinder Hira read out the warrant of appointment of Justice Joseph.

State chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Speaker Tulsi Ram, cabinet ministers, judges of HP high court and Kerala, chairpersons and members of various commissions and other prominent persons were present among others on the occasion.  Justice Kurian is replacing Justice Jagdish Bhalla, who has been transferred as chief justice of Rajasthan High Court. After transfer of Justice Bhalla ,Justice RB Mishra, the senior most judge was officiating as the acting CJ of HP high court.

Justice Joesph, who had been appointed as a judge of the High Court in August 2000, was the acting as chief justice of Kerala High Court after his predecessor Justice SR Bannurmath retired on 23rd January. Born November 1952, Justice Kurian is a graduate from the Kerala Law Academy, Thirunavanthapuram. He began his legal practice in 1979, and was designated as a senior advocate in 1996. Justice Joseph was appointed as additional advocate general of Kerala from 1994 to 1996.
