Himachal puts embargo on introducing Bt Brinjal

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh state cabinet today decided not to allow sowing of the controversial exotic species of Bt. Brinjal strain before its harmful effect are ascertained by authority. The cabinet, which met at the secretariat here this afternoon, observed that trials as on assessing the harmful effects of Bt Brinjal on human health, environment and ecology have not yet been conclusively conducted, therefore Bt Brinjal would not be introduced in the state for the time being. The cabinet further observed that the entire issue of Bt Brinjal and genetically modified seeds is a very sensitive issue and until and unless satisfactory answers to various questions pertaining to these are not found, the state government will not promote it
