Shimla (Nov 16): Presiding over the 150th anniversary celebrations of Indian Audit & Accounts Department here today, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said that the CAG was one of the most important constitutional authorities and one of the pillars of Indian democracy and the IA&AD functioned as a bridge between the Legislature and the Executive. He said that it ensured the accountability of the central and state governments to their respective legislatures.

The Chief Minister said that the role of audit was not only limited to ensuring that the financial rules have been abided but it also goes for beyond mere adherence to rules. He said that the office of the C&AG was one of institutions that lead a unitary character to the federal system. He said that it also ensured that uniform accounting and auditing standards and methodologies were followed across the length or breadth of the country and also that accounts of the Union and State Government prepared on the basis of uniform criteria.

The Chief Minister also released the compendium of present audit and accounts in the state. He also inaugurated the exhibition of books and journals on the occasion. SP Pillay, Director General, National Audit and Accounts Institute, dwelt upon the historic background of the audit system. He said that Indian Audit & Accounts Services were credited with effective auditing of public funds at all level besides contributing in UN and other external agency auditing. He also detailed out the training programme of the Institute.
