Mandi: Non-availability of chemical fertilizers in government outlets this year has caused panic among farmers in the district. Addressing news persons on Sunday, Paras Ram, president, Kisan Sabha, Balh unit, lamented that the government was in a state of quandary on how to compensate the shortfall of Rs 600 per tonne subsidy on fertilizer reduced by the Center, which had resulted in non-availability of chemical fertilizers in the depots of HIMFED and IFFCO.

He lamented that the Center was earlier giving Rs 900 subsidy per tonne, which had abruptly been reduced to Rs 300. “The uncertainty in the government to take a decision has resulted in fertilizer shortage in the state,” he said. He said that during the past three years, farmers had suffered losses due to failure of monsoon and this year non-supply of fertilizer has dashed their hopes.
