Shimla: Doppler radar for Shimla is figuring in the list of such locations identified under IMDs modernization phase-II which is under formulation currently. Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Telecommunication and Information Technology Kapil Sibal replied to a question by Viplove Thakur in Rajya Sabha in a written reply today, PIB release said here. Doppler radar installation in Himachal Pradesh is not scheduled to take place during the on-going modernization phase-I of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) taken up during the current XI plan period, he said. Doppler weather radars are functional at Chennai, Kolkata, Machilipatnam, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Delhi and Sriharikota. Commissioning of Doppler radars is taken up in another 10 locations in the country and such locations are chosen purely on the merits and priorities of weather monitoring and forecasting exigencies.
