Mandi (Nov 25): Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, TA Gonsalves while addressing students of Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Engineering College, Sundernagar and Polytechnic College, Sundernagar advocated implementing appropriate technology for the benefit of the general masses. He also indicated that it shall be the priority of IIT Mandi to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people of Himachal Pradesh.
While addressing the young engineers, he discussed the architecture, implementation and deliverables in emerging area of low-cost technologies and stressed on mobile banking, which, according to him, could be adopted by all with increasing mobile penetration. He emphasized that mobile banking eliminates the need for visiting bank branches for financial transactions and also was cheaper than using ATM and credit card etc. He said that only 35% of population of India was using banking facility, and it was expected that mobile banking wold attract larger population to transact through banking channels and introduce a paradigm shift from cash economy to digital economy. He stressed that this type of design of technology should be taken up by engineers to solve the problems of rural & urban population.
