Mandi: Addressing a rally at Sundernagar to protest against construction of hydro power projects and cement plants in hill states, noted environmentalist Sunderlal Bahuguna on Monday said encroaching upon rivers and streams for power generation is a direct assault on hill culture. “From Kashmir to Kohima, Himalayan environment is under threat, and if the flora and fauna of this great mountain chain in not preserved, we are heading for a disaster,” Bahuguna said.
President of Himalaya Niti Abhiyan Samiti, Kulbhushan Upmanyu said over 26,000 families were uprooted when the Pong, Bhakra projects were executed. “The families rendered homeless then are still seeking justice. False promises are made when a project is proposed but once executed, nobody bothers about people directly affected by it,”
Upmanyu said.
