Arrangements completed for Himalayan Open Paragliding Championship

Shimla: All arrangements have been completed for the world level Himalayan Open Paragliding Championship-2010 being organised from 11th to 14th November at Bir-Billing in district Kangra of HP. This was stated by Satpal Singh Satti, chief parliamentary secretary in a statement issued here today. He said that chief minister, Prem Kumar Dhumal would inaugurate the championship at Bir while Ravinder Singh Ravi, Irrigation and Public Health Minister will be the chief guest on the concluding day. He said that a technical committee had been set up with the assistance of Aero Club of India to ensure rescue, retrieval and safety measures during the competition. The committee will also look after other technical aspects like weather, temperature etc. The committee headed by Air Commodore, T.K Rath is assisted by five other members having distinction in adventure sports. He said that it would be a mega event in which women and local Para-gliders would also participate with para-gliders of international- level.

It was for the first time that novice category had been introduced in paragliding competition, which would provide an opportunity to the local and budding para-gliders to participate in the Championship. The championship had been divided into three categories .i.e. open category (30-35 kms), women category (30 kms) and novice category (10-15 kms). The top three winners of open championship will be given cash prizes of Rs. 25,000, Rs. 15000 and Rs.10,000 respectively. Similarly, the winners of women and novice category would get cash prizes of Rs. 10000, Rs. 7000 and Rs.5000 along-with trophies. The championship would be organised by Department of Youth Services and Sports together with H.P. tourism department with technical Support of Aero Club of India.
