Shimla (Oct 27):  In a surprising move, Hockey India president and senior Congress leader from Himachal,  Vidya Stokes today announced to resign from the post, to which she was elected not long ago in August this year  after defeating former captain Pargat Singh in a fiercely contested election. The announced was made through a statement by Hockey India, which claimed that the decision was in accordance with her commitment made to the sports minister to step down after the Commonwealth Games.

While talking to HimVani this evening over phone, Stokes said that she submitted her resignation to International Hockey Federation Secretary General Leandro Negre in New Delhi today as she was not finding time to attend to assignment associated with the post. After relinquishing from the post, she would remain member of HI and expressed willingness to continue serving Indian and world hockey. She said that as the Panchayati Raj institution elections are approaching in Himachal Pradesh, she would like to give more times to the Congress Party after leaving the current assignment.

However, she denied any pressure on her from Congress and Hockey India to leave the post. Strokes refused that there was constant pressure to free sports management and administrative bodies from the hold of politicians.
