Shimla: A spokesman of state government said in a press release here today that Kinnauri Shawl had been assigned Certificate No. 125 and Geographical Indication No 149 by the Registrar, Geographical Indications, Government of India.
He said that it was a matter of pride for the State that after registration of Kullu Shawl, Kangra Tea and Chamba Rumal, Kinnauri Shawl is the fourth traditional product of Himachal Pradesh which would get protection under GI Act, 1999. The Registration of Kinnauri Shawl under GI Act would prevent the unauthorized production as well as misuse of the brand name of Kinnauri Shawl originating from a place, other than the place of origin. Unauthorized use and infringement of the registered Geographical Indication, by producers, other than from the place of origin of these products could result in maximum of three years imprisonment and maximum fine of Rs. 2,00,000 under the Act.
The move to get Kinnauri Shawl registered under the Geographical Indications (GIs) of Goods Act, 1999 from the Registrar, GI, Govt. of India was initiated by Himachal Pradesh Patent Information Centre (HPPIC), State Council for Science, Technology & Environment, H.P.
