Shimla declares smoke-free city

Shimla (Oct 2): Himachal Pradesh was officially declared a smoke-free city today with the Queen of Hills having got rid of puff and cloud of smoke in public places.

While talking to media persons here today, state Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal informed that on the pattern of Chandigarh, Shimla has also been declared a smoke-free city from today onward as it would be best tribute to the Father of the nation.

It was on this day two years back when provisions of the Central Tobacco Control Act was invoked in the state on October 2, 2008. He said the government was committed to extend this campaign in all district headquarters by declaring them smoke-free by May 31 next year, which is the World Anti-Tobacco Day. Dhumal assured to open five-bed de-addiction centres in all government-run district hospitals.

  1. now this is cool. all credit goes to the people who were involved in this initiative and a huge thanks to the govt. for going ahead with this. i sincerely hope that the people get behind this and make it a success.
    it'd be great to know what exactly are the laws/rules that have been put in place. is it no-smoking in all public areas? no-smoking in bars and restaurants? special smoking zones have been provided for smokers? more detail is needed in these types of reports.
