Shimla: Even HIV+ve mothers giving birth can feed their newborns as mother milk is safe, moreover breast feeding does not transmit infection to baby but blood does.

The was the main message at the five-day training workshop organized at PGI Chandigarh attended by 22 nurses from Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh. One of the participants, Aruna from Mandi Zonal Hospital, told HimVani that the aim of the training was to impart know-how to nurses about dealing with HIV+ve pregnant women.

Out of total 22 participants, 18 belonged to Himachal Pradesh and the workshop was organized under the aegis of Global Funds Project for AIDS, TB & Malaria. She said that most interesting point of the training was to learn that even HIV positive mothers can or must feed their newborn.

Under the above project, 90,000 nurses would be trained at the national level and about 40,000 nurses have already been trained in the third year of programme.

  1. Great to know that breast milk is safe. This training will be of immense benefit to the whole community, as there is still so much confusion and ostracism regarding HIV positive people.
