Mandi: The employment assistant at Khalwahn panchayat in Mandi district has been fined Rs 1,000 by SDM Gohar for not being able to provide employment to an applicant who had registered himself under the NREGA provision. The SDM ordered that the amount should be deposited in the government treasury within a month.

On the other hand, the complainant, Sant Ram, is planning to approach a higher court, reasoning that while the Act has provision for unemployment allowance if no employment is provided, they have not been paid any amount.

It may be mentioned that Sant Ram of Bali Chowki had filed a petition in the court of SDM Gohar in Mandi district under the Workmen Compensation Act under the labour rules to get unemployment allowance as he and few others were not given work on demand under NREGA. The presiding officer (SDM Gohar) observed that it was the fault of the ‘Rozgar Sevak’ of the Gram Panchayat and hence he imposed a penalty of Rs 1,000 on him.
