Mandi: In the backdrop of the snow-clad ranges of the Himalayas, the first multi-crore Indian Institute of Technology in the Himalayan region is coming up in the sprawling lush green valley of Kamand in the north east of Mandi. The project has been launched at a solitary place with the twin objective of generating employment and bringing out scientists and technologists of the highest caliber for taking up research, design and development, accomplishing the gigantic task of building new modern India. This prestigious institution would transform Himachal Pradesh into a globally renowned centre of research design and technology.
As the central and state governments were eager to launch the working of the IIT at the earliest, the first batch of 98 students of B.Tec first year was started at Rorkee, the mentoring institute of IIT Mandi last year. The Himachal Pradesh Government, in its efforts to start the institution soon has transferred PWD Rest House, Mandav Complex of HP Tourism and some buildings of local Government College to the IIT on returnable basis. The IIT Mandi has so far 16 full time faculty other than 6 part-time professors, 7 staff people and 40 contract employees. Once shifted to the new campus the strength of the students will swell to over 1500 in the year 2015 with 150 faculty and 300 staff members. By the year 2020 the institute will have as many as 8000 students, 800 faculty and 1200 staff members. The campus in Kamand would provide world class facilities of remarkably high quality standards of education. The state of the art campus will have modern class rooms, labs, sports stadiums, clubs, housing complex, guest houses, shopping centers, school and hospital. Prof. Timothy A Gonsalves, Director IIT Mandi says, that the institution is being developed with the vision of laying strong emphasis on practical and product oriented research and development programmes.
