Shimla: Society for Disability and Rehabilitation Studies (SDRS), Himachal Pradesh Chapter, is organising a first ever ‘On the Spot Painting Competition’ on ‘Disability Rights’ in this hilly state. Students of department of visual art from HP University and colleges of Shimla city will make paintings on ‘Disability Rights: Shifts from Charity to Human Rights’ at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Shimla on 22nd April, 2007.
Satyagrah will be the theme of poster making competition for students of plus two schools. The department of art, language and culture, HP Government has assured some assistance for the programme.
According to Ajai Srivastava, Chairman, SDRS, HP Chapter, this painting competition is a part of their on going campaign to sensitise people, particularly the younger generation, about the issues related to disability. As the fight to achieve the rights of the disabled is a sort of Satyagrah, the SDRS is trying to make young students understand its importance. The event will be a humble tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in the centenary year of Satyagrah. The winners of the competition will be given cash awards apart from merit certificates.
SK Sharma, Chief General Manager of BSNL, Himachal Circle, will be the Chief Guest and Dr Dinesh Gandhi and Meera Gandhi, who has been doing social work for the disabled in the UK will be the guest in the prize distribution function.
