Strike by trade unions hits normal life in Himachal

Shimla: Most banks and commercial establishments remained closed in Himachal today as part of strike call given by central government employee unions to protest price hike, alleged violation of labour laws and increasing privatisation.

Most of the business establishments in Shimla and others parts of the state remained closed as hotels, banks and government insurance companies, and the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) employees joined the day-long protest. Hower State Bank of India (SBI), AIR, rail and road employees kept out of the strike. CITU and AITUC also organised a protest rally at Subji Mandi ground, joined by protesting employees in large number.

Jagat Ram, state CITU president, told HimVani that CITU-affiliated Left unions had requested business establishments and government employees to observed complete shutdown and it remained successfull as most of private hotels, hydro-power projects and various central and state government departments in the state remained closed.
