Shimla: Taking a long stride to control wrath of nature, Himachal has achieved a major breakthrough as its first set of anti-hail guns, also first in India, are already being installed in the state. “The guns using shock waves would help knock down hail clouds before they could pour down to affect the standing apple crop,” horticulture minsiter Narinder Bragta said today. He said that three other similar anti-hail guns were being installed in fruit-growing belts of the district and work on them was under progress. After importing the radar, one has already been installed at 10,000-ft- high Tumdoo peak of Kharapathar, while others are being set up in Jubbal, Kotkhai and Rohru areas. He also said that these guns were being installed on pilot basis and would soon make their way into other parts of the state after testing of these guns is finished successfully.
It is worth mentioning that about 30 per cent apple crop in upper areas of Shimla district is destroyed every year by hailstorms. After inviting the expression of interest, state government selected US-based firm to install the guns and three crore is being spent on the intial phase of this plan. Keeping in mind the adverse impact of anti-ail guns on hill climate, the state government has opted for acetylene-based guns. The radars would keep a check on the movement of cloud formation and in case of hail cloud, it would raise an alarm, shooting up a shock wave to dismantle the clouds. The project is expected to cover up the entire cost within one year of the installation as it would save crop worth Rs 50 crore in a single season, experts averred.

i hope this is run as a project designed to help the apple industry and not a political spin tool. if run the right way, this would be a great step forward in modernisation of agircultural & horticultural practices. this kind of attitude and will from the governments is exactly what the doc prescribed. not only will it help the existing industry, it'll also generate more interest in foreign investment in new and experimental crops. a while ago i read an article on this very website about coffee cultivation in HP. it wouldn't hurt to get some investment in that field from local/foreign investors, for example. there're a few more crops that can and will flourish in HP in coming times. what's needed for that to be sustainable is a level-headed approach by the government to make sure the industry is supported in all major aspects and investors are made aware of that.
