Shimla: Himachal Pradesh horticulture minister Narinder Bragta has said that Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd had sanctioned Rs 3.37 crore under the Crop Insurance Scheme for apple and mango growers in the state during the current financial year.
Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd had been approved by the state government for implementing Crop Insurance Scheme in the State, Bragta said in a press statement here today. He stated that the government started crop insurance scheme for apple and mango on a pilot basis in 2009-10 in Theog, Jubbal, Narkanda, Rohru and Chirgaon blocks of Shimla district and Ani block of Kullu district for apple crop and in Fatehpur, Nurpur, Indora and Nagrota Surian blocks of Kangra district for mango crop.
About 3,092 apple and 209 mango growers have insured over 2.68 lakh apple and 0.16 lakh mango trees respectively under the scheme. Out of these, 1,558 apple growers are from Shimla district and 1,534 from Kullu district. He further said that as per the provisions of the scheme, insurance coverage for loanee farmers is compulsory and for the non-loanee farmers it is optional.
