Shimla: Taking on the state government head-on over poor condition of roads, private bus operators in Shimla district today kept their vehicles off the roads, causing harassment to commuters on at least 300 routes.
President of Himalayan Private Bus Operators Union Mohinder Chauhan said the strike was meant to make the government realise poor conditions of roads. He threatened that they would be forced to go on an indefinite strike if no action is taken. He also attributed the high rate of accidents in the state to poor maintenance of roads.
He alleged that pot-holes on the roads and landslides were mainly responsible for vehicles developing technical faults, which lead to accidents. ‘‘The poor condition of roads also causes vehicles to go off-balance as has been evident in a number of accidents,” he claimed. Chauhan added that instead of taking up road repair n a massive scale, the government insists on challaning vehicles. He said that no private vehicles plied in Shimla district today, as all the 108 buses operated by private operators stayed off the roads.
