Mandi: Information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) has revealed misappropriation in disbursement of funds under NREGA. Though information sought related to a specific panchayat area, it hints at wider irregularities in the implementation of the scheme.

Sumanlata of Madota village in Jogindernagar sub-division of Mandi district had filed an RTI application to seek information on developmental works being carried in her village. It was subsequently revealed that attendance records of workers under NREGA were fudged and money misappropriated.

According to master rolls obtained under RTI Act, one Sapna Devi has been shown attending work on at least four projects for which a payment of around Rs 5,500 had also been shown as made.

Sumanlata filed another application in the Mandi education department and the revealed information made clear that during the said period Sapna Devi was employed in Government High School, Drang, which means that attendance records of NREGA works were being fudged The applicant in a letter written to Mandi SP has requested for a probe into the matter.
