Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today informed the House that the state government would effectively take up the issue of channelisation of the 2.5-km stretch of Swan river in Una district with the Punjab government.

Replying to a question by Congress member Mukesh Agnihotri during the Question Hour, Dhumal said that since the stretch from Santoshgarh to Bathri village of Una district also touches the boundaries of Punjab at various points, the issue is an inter-state subject and the state government cannot channelise the river of its own.

“Government had also talked to Union water resources minister Pawan Bansal over the issue and even requested Punjab government through a letter to take up the issue at the earliest. We would again raise the issue with the Punjab government and the Centre so that the benefit of the channellisation reaches to the villages of the state in this stretch also,” he said.

Earlier, raising the issue, Agnihotri said that due to delay in channelisation, the danger of soil erosion in villages situated on the stretch has increased.
