Shimla: Himachal Pradesh University today organized a one-day national seminar on “Rethinking Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj in the Context of Globalization” under the aegis of Gandhi Smark Nidhi (Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh).
Vice-chancellor Sunil Kumar Gupta was the guest of honour and RC Sobti, VC of Panjab University, delivered the keynote address while Prof.(Retd.) Ramakant Angiras, former Kalidas Chair professor of Sanskrit, Panjab University, presided over the seminar. Prof. VP Sharma, Deptt. of English, coordinated the seminar.
Prof. Sharma said that Gandhiji’s Hind Swaraj was published in 1909 and it still holds relevance for all those who are struggling to cope with the social, economical, political and cultural aspects of globalization at the local, national and global level in the frightening contexts of terrorism, violence, socio-economic disparities, hunger, poverty, planetary destruction through global warming, cultural imperialism etc.
He further said that the seminar aimed at critically analysing the seminal significance of Gandhi’s idea of truth, non-violence, satyagraha, swaraj, swadeshi, sarvodaya, nation and nationalism, education, health, science and machinery, sampradaayik sadbhavna (communal harmony) environmental consciousness, etc. as manifest in Hind Swaraj.
