Shimla: British national Jodie Under Hill, popularly known as garbage girl, was on Saturday conferred with a Green Award for running ˜Mountain Cleaners”, a voluntary organization that collects disposed waste left behind by tourists in Dharamshala.

Himachal Pradesh public works minister Gulab Singh Thakur felicitated the recipient while inaugurating Vatavaran, a two-day environment film festival organized by Centre for Media Studies (CMS) at the Gaiety Theatre. Acknowledging the contribution of Jodie and her organization, Thakur said, “Cleaner and greener hills were the very basis of sustaining tourism in the region.”
Speaking at the function, 34-year-old Hill announced her plans for adopting another town after Dharamshala for clearing waste. Terming the “cleanliness, an environment awareness campaign” in Dharamshala a success story, she assured to replicate similar efforts for high altitude Manimahesh Lake in Chamba district.

  1. why are you so much against publishing pictures of subjects here ? I think it would have enriched this story . You people are doing a commendable job but half heartedly . Give appropriate pics here and see the results !

    • thanks Munish for your suggestion. Somehow we have not been able to manage good pics and videos. We will definitely try to improve on this.

  3. Great work by Jodie! Now we need more people to show such initiative, preferably Indian citizens! And more people to keep up the good practices.

Yes, it would be nice to have more photos on Himvani, to go with the articles 🙂

  5. Gr8 ! But what about our own late Kinkri Devi ? An outsider cleaning our own backyard should make us ashamed at the same time. Are we giving in to the white skin syndrome as it makes a better photo-op for the organisers as well as the press?! So much for Himachali pride (if at all !).

  7. Honoring Jodie is a good thing and should be an example to all of us. Media has a vital role to play and should highlight the work done by so many Kinkri Devi's and Bahuguna's for their native land.
