Shimla: Investigation into the death of eight migrant laborers at a mine owned by Himalayan Mineral Limestone Company in Sataun has revealed that unscientific mining and lack of basic facilities for workers led to the mishap.

According to preliminary reports, the limestone slab lying adjoining the single brick wall of a hut suddenly came down after heavy rain in the area. Workers employed in these mine quarries also alleged that they are not provided with hot boots, uniforms, hand-gloves, helmets, masks, etc, which are essential as per the norms. Worker union leaders alleged that state labour department too has never bothered about the plight of workers to provide them safe working conditions and housing facility. Talking to HimVani, state CITU member Jagat Ram demanded necessary action against negligent and errant industrial firms.
