The Himachal Pradesh tourism department is planning to develop the Old Hindustan Tibet Road as a tourism destination. The proposal in this respect has already been sent to the Central government last week.

It may be mentioned here that the historic road has been lying unused ever since the new Hindustan Tibet Road, which runs along Satluj river, became functional. Recently, the old road was again in news due to severe damage caused to the new road by floods in Satluj, as it was proposed that the old route should be revived as an alternative.

Now the government plans to use the nearly 170 km road to open the region to tourism, considering that the road passes through some breathtakingly beautiful areas. The plan is part of the Rs 50 crore project proposal sent to the Union government. The project will cover places coming in between Narkanda and Vangtu. Narkanda, Sungti, Saraikoti and Nichar would be the main centres to be developed.
