Shimla: Himachal Pradesh government has decided to give a monthly pension of Rs 330 to single women in the state who are above 45 years of age. Director social justice and empowerment, Maneesh Garg, said that the notification to this regard would be made soon, besides carrying out a survey of single women eligible for pension.
The government has also decided to raise the annual income slab from Rs 6,000 to Rs 9,000 in case of single women and from Rs 11,000 to Rs 15,000 in case of women with children to make them eligible. It may be remembered that single women in the state had launched a massive protest in 2008, whereby the Vidhan Sabha was gharoed after undertaking a 62-km march from Dhami to Shimla.
Subhash Mendhapurkar, director of Social Uplift Through Rural Action (SUTRA), an NGO that has spearheading the campaign, however, said that Rs 330 was a meagre amount and that the government should pay at least Rs 1,000 per month to single women. Mendhapurkar said there were 2.19 lakh single women in the state, of which about 1.50 lakh are over 45.
Single women are not beggers, not even in Himachal Pradesh, kids notwithstanding.Instead of a begging bowl, give them empowerment, property rights and education. They are worth it.
