Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has asked M/s Mohan Meakin, the oldest liquor distillery in the state set up in 1855, to stop production for violation of environment norms. According to state pollution control board member-secretary Nagin Nanda, the liquor company has been issued a notice for discharging sewage into the vicinity of the facility and has been asked to stop production immediately.
The liquor firm was discharging effluents into the nearby fields without getting it treated, officials claimed. “Despite having a treatment plant installed in the factory, it was not working properly,” officials added. The company was established by Edward Dyer from Britain in 1855 in Kasauli under the name Dyer Breweries and later shifted to nearby Solan town.
