SHIMLA: The Principal of St. Stephen’s College of Delhi University, Anil Wilson, has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor (VC) of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU). A notification to this effect was issued on Tuesday by Governor V S Kokje who is Chancellor of the University.
Wilson would replace L R Verma, who completed his three years term on December 31, 2006. Wilson is the first ever alumnus of the HPU to be appointed as its VC. Earlier from July, 1995 to April, 1996 when C L Kundu was the Vice Chancellor he had served as Pro Vice Chancellor of HPU.
Born in Shimla on October 21, 1947, Wilson spent his childhood in Kotgarh area of Shimla district, where his father Late M M Wilson was Headmaster of Gorton Mission School. Anil Wilson completed his schooling from St Edward’s School in Shimla and graduated in Science from DAV College Amritsar. He did his Ph.D in English Literature from HPU.
Before his appointment as the Principal of St. Stephen’s in the year 1991, he was a lecturer in government colleges at Shimla and Mandi and later in the English department of HPU. He has held several important positions as an educationist, the recent one being member of Delhi High Court Committee on criteria for admissions to nursery class.
He has also been decorated with several awards including, award for best educationist in 2001, Bharat Shiromani Award 2004, Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award 1999, Beresford Hope Award, St. Augustine’s Foundation, London in 1984.
