Seminar on water conservation and organic farming

Shimla: Karsog Valley Farmers Group (KVFG) Organic Farming Association of India (OFAI) will hold a seminar-cum-workshop on water conservation and organic farming at Prof. KL Sharma Trust campus, Churag, near Shimlam on May 22 to 24.

The agenda of the seminar is to discuss and demonstrate various organic farming techniques, water conservation methods in hills and various national and international policies governing organic farming.

Among the speakers at the seminars would be Ramon Magsaysay Award winner Rajendra Singh; OFAI secretary Dr Claude Alvares, one of the pioneers of independent organic farming movement in the country; Director OFAI (North Region) Dr Bharatendu Prakash,Vikram Sarabhai, a fellow at the MP Council of Science & Technology; and Dr Arun Kumar Sharma, a renowned agriculture scientist.

    We are tara foundation from Bihar and started a movement called GM Free Bihar Movement in Bihar. We are opposing GMOs and propmoting Organic Farming in Bihar.

  5. Almost Every one knows That Rajender Singh educated the villagers about the wisdom of ancient methods of water conservation. He motivated the villagers for repairing abandoned johads ,we in himachal call them Kufars, check dams, and restoring dried up wells. His vision worked and Miraculously the river Aravari, that had only been a fading memory, started flowing again ( RIVER REBORN) after about eight decades! He tirelessly worked 13 years for the restoration of the river.
    Known as JALPURUSH and WATERMAN of India is fouder of Tarun Bharat Sangh, working intensively on water conservation-Need of the hour.

    Karsog Valley Farmers Group (KVFG) is a registered Co-operative of farmers operating from Churag in Shimla Hills since April 2006. KVFG has successfully worked towards farmer’s welfare in the region, be it in the area of marketing farmer produce or training them towards the various techniques of sustainable farming practices.

    About Organic Farming Association of India (OFAI – http://www.ofai.org)
    The Organic Farming Association of India (OFAI) is a leading organization of grassroots organic farmers. The primary objective of the association is to promote organic farming within the country and to take all such means that are available to achieve this purpose. OFAI is one of the prime movers of the “PGS Organic” labelling scheme meant to provide an assurance of guarantee of organically grown produce exclusively for domestic consumers.

    The conference will cover various aspects of Organic farming techniques practiced elsewhere in the country and in-situ and ex-situ water conservation techniques. Water conservation in various parts of the state especially Rajasthan and how people have successfully implemented techniques to conserve water will be key highlights. Eminent Speakers will also discuss way by which the farmers of Himachal Pradesh can contribute to the water conservation and sustainability drive. Organic Farming is in essence a water conserving technique and various lectures and demonstrations on techniques to grow crops successfully will be discussed in this conference.
    In addition information will be provided on the various initiatives both with India and internationally on policies such as those proposed by the IAASTD and organisations such as IFOAM, involved in the Organic Farming movement and the benefits from these organisations to the farmers. Certification of organic farming options such as PGS labelling will also be discussed as an alternative marketing options for poor and marginal farmers.
    The aim of this conference is to sensitize the farmers towards the overall movement of Organic Farming and provide them with the necessary know-how on way of contributing towards this movement holistically. This will enable them towards making a right choice towards sustainable lives for their families as well as the environment.

  13. I am from Darjeeling and my mother will be attending this workshop with a Sister of St. Marys Darjeeling as we too are promoting Organic Farming in the villages. My mother is a retired Principal of Industrial Training Institute, Tung. Darjeeling and now a days is involved in social service for the up liftment of women in the society. I hope she will have a good time learning new things that we can incorporate here in Darjeeling.

Sir I am a fan of Jalpurush Mr. Rajendra Singh.I belong to Orissa where 70% of the population r directly or indirectly dependant on agriculture.Previously i was working with a media project of Ministry of Agriculture ,Govt. of Indai,we have a team in our state & r working with a small organisation.I want some support from ur organisation for my state to do Organic farming,water conservation,preservation of traditional seed & proper marketing price for crops,vegs.
