Shimla: Villagers from Pandra-Bish area of Rampur sub-division, and supported by their local deities, on Friday launched an agitation against dumping of waste from the nearby under-construction 24 MW Koot hydro power project. Accusing the project management of defying environment norms, villagers threatened to disrupt construction activity at the site if dumping of debris was not stopped.

Leader of Village Protest Samiti, Vijay Negi told HimVani that two deities – Peer and Nag – have decided not to accept prayers to express their displeasure at violation of environment by illegally dumping debris down the hills, thus destroying the natural wealth, besides causing air pollution by excessive mining at project sites.

He said that about eighty villagers gathered outside the SDM office at Rampur and 16 of them started an indefinite hunger strike to protest against the power project. The project is being constructed by Sai Engineering Ltd.
