BRO completes snow clearance on Rohtang Pass; relief to 133 stranded

38 Border Road Task Force of Border Road Organisation led by Commander Col S K Awasthi completed the herculean mission of snow clearance rescue operation late this evening to facilitates snowbound 133 people in Lahaul Valley for last six days, however, BRO would allow the stranded people to cross the ice land tomorrow. Col S K Awasthi told media today that three vehicles of Lahaul Spiti Administration carrying Deputy Commission Dev Singh Singh Negi allowed crossing the 13050 Rohtang Pass as it was closed six days ago stranded about 133 people in the snowbound Lahaul Spiti district.

He said that 38 BRTF scaled Rohtang pass clearing about five to six feet high layer of snow on this strategic road braving extreme cold condition at Minus 10 to minus 15 degrees in the day times. The high-velocity wind hampered the snow clearance however the BRO made it possible after officially closing the road on Nov 15. Five days of heavy frequent snowfall and snow blizzard forced the snow clearance to close down however with the clearing of the sky since last four days BRO personals touched the 13050 ft Rohtang pass clearing road from the two sides between Merhi to Rohtang and Koksar to Rohtang.

Deputy Commissioner Lahaul Spiti Dev Singh Negi who want to cross the Rohtang pass from Manali to Keylong hailed the brave BRO officials to clear the snow facing hard and inclement weather conditions. Mr. Negi said that 133 people who are stranded at Koksar, Keylong and Mayar valley in the Lahaul subdivision would not evacuate today. All the stranded people reportedly look after in the shelters camps at Koksar and Keylong for last six days.

The district administration decided to allow the small and light vehicles to cross the Rohtang Pass. The heavy vehicles stranded on the snow pass and either side of the valley would be allowed to run on the cleared road. The vehicles would be allowed to ply from Manali toward Lahaul on Nov 24. This road has become snowbound on Nov 16 and 17 after mounting of snow on the booth side of the valley. As many as 46 people have stranded on the Rohtang Pass forced to return back Koksar to Lahaul Valley as their vehicles got stranded on the snowy pass.
