Dharamsala: Security agencies in Himachal Pradesh appear to a bit jittery over ensuring that nothing untoward happens during the two IPL matches to be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Stadium here. While earlier HPCA dropped its plans to have paragliders hover over the stadium during the inaugural match, now there are reports that authorities have banned paragliding in the entire state from April 11 till April 20.

Meanwhile, HPCA spokesperson Sanjay Sharma said that the two matches would be preceded by a rich variety of cultural programmers including Himachali, Tibetan folk and also popular Hindi music. The musical extravaganza would be kicked off by Mohit Chauhan, the best known Himachali singer in the country.

  1. Its shamefull that while cricket players are treated like VVIPs, paragliding sports person (incl india's best who have won in international events) are treated like suspects and security risk.

police didnt even bother to come and figure out how many ppl are flying and who they are. just ban paragliding. What gives them right to ban my freedom to cover their deficiencies in doing there job professionally instead of easy way of just banning. Dont i have right to do my sports away from cricket area.. Do they really own the whole sky..and maybe my soul too

  5. This is an outright abuse of power by the police and security agencies. I can understand banning of flying over the stadiums where the matches are held, but banning paragliding per se is ridiculous. Somebody need to file a case in the supreme court against the govt authorities for infringement of personal rights and freedom. Do we have any good lawyers who fly too ??

  9. can’t believe what I’m reading. In the comments, that is. Guys – it’s india, shit happens there all the time. If some shit were to hit the fan during the IPL thing, you’d all be going – why didn’t they do something about it before hand? how hard is it to just shut down gliding for a few days? yes – all of you’d be saying that. guy pitman – you probably belong to all those shitheads that i run into all the time in the western world that tell me – the police should’ve done this or this when that mumbai shit happened. so just shutup and enjoy the dust mate.
I know, its not fair. Most of my friends and relatives are involved in paragliding and its frustrating. I completely understand – but thats the reality of the world we live in guys. the bottom line is, it’s not safe. terrorists target easy places – HP is one. I see the whole thing as a precaution. IPL is coming to HP for the first time. Anything that saves the day. And lives for that matter. As time goes by, HP security agencies (if such a thing exists) will have a better idea of what should be done.
Think of it, it’d be the best way to carry out some James Bond-style espionage! I hope everything goes well and IPL puts HP on the global cricket match.
Sorry for being harsh mr. pitman, most westerners dont like it when i tell them how they should handle their shit…. good to have your input though.

  11. hi VT,
Guy is a good person not like those yu referred, I do agree with yu, but the point of pilots here was that why should have been paragliding banned forcefully every time ! referring to the himalayanopen 2009 event where himachal tourism didn't cooperate with us and now w.r.t. that very cricket match at dharamshala [we don't oppose other sports, its how sportsmen spirit is like 🙂 ] but no one discuses the matter with us neither willing to at billing paragliding association that is the supreme body at himachal pardesh and forcefully with the help of policemen blocks the only way up to the takeoff. well I'm glad that days were over and we are back to the skies.
    cheers,

  13. Hi VT – Interesting response you gave me. I guess I may be a shithead in your eyes, but it would probably be better if we met face to face for a while before you made that assumption. Anyway even if you do think I'm a shithead, I would like to clarify that I am not from the West, rather I am from South Africa. But I suppose you come from the background where "shit happens" and you get to decide where the Western world starts and stops.
I must say you do sound like a person who is a bit bitter and unhappy with the Western world. I would suggest you get over your bigoted and xenophobic sentiments as you are only causing yourself stress. However you probably dont have much stress because you sleep tight in your little word knowing that you are safe from the "paragliding James Bond espionage terrorists" that are prolific in the HP area. Anyway no problem for being "harsh" I take no personal offense. I have Western origins and disapprove of many of their ways. I would ask you please to use some of the energy you waste on being pissed off with Europeans in trying to help the HP administration in setting out a process where at least locals can fly uninhibited and foreigners. You may think the whole stink was just over the IPL but it’s not. It is a far larger issue where your HP chums will only let people fly with a licence and a specific insurance policy. While at the same time there is no insurance company or licensing authority offering either of these in India. Maybe you and your HP chums could take some learnings from the West or even Africa in getting a licensing authority and insurance company to validate your otherwise pathetic regulations.
That’s enough from me. I must say after 3 years in India HP is still my favourite place and the place where I have met the kindest and most humble people. I hope that won’t change if we ever meet MR VT
