The Bioinformatics Centre of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is organizing a three days 22nd workshop-cum-training program from 21-23, November 2016 on ‘Molecular Modelling for Disease Causing Proteins and Drug Targeting’ keeping in view the strengths of bioinformatics tools in analyzing diseases-associated proteins of microbial origin, their 3D structure elucidation and predicted functions.

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. R. S. Chauhan, Pro-Vice Chancellor HPU, Shimla who emphasized the dire need of interaction of experts of system biology and molecular modeling in discovering, designing and developing new synthetic and plant-based molecules which can block toxins, disease causing proteins and cancer causing organisms. The inaugural function was attended by Prof. Neeraj Sharma, Dean Faculty of  Engineering & Technology, Prof. Shanti Sharma, Prof. D. C. Gautam, Prof. Manu Sood, Director, UIIT and other faculty from Department of Chemistry and Bio sciences. Prof. S. S. Kanwar, Program Coordinator, and Dean Faculty of Life Sciences introduced the theme and content of the workshop to the participants.

The workshop is being attended by fifteen participants from diverse disciplines of physics, chemistry and biology. The experts from a CSIR – Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, Department of System Biology, Punjab University, and JUIT, Waknaghat will deliver lectures and impart hands on training to the participants.

Topics to be covered include introduction to various databases pertaining to information on 3-D structure of proteins and how the information regarding 3D protein structure from these databases can be downloaded, which can further be analyzed for molecular visualization of the drug-protein interaction with specific online/offline tools as well as in silico molecular docking studies. Many insights may be gleaned about the future of the three dimensional structural analysis of proteins, with the help of discussions and  presentations. Training along with hands on is an important part of this workshop which will enhance the students skills and knowledge.
