Wildlife wing of Himachal Pradesh today celebrated in the State to increase awareness on the protection of wildlife and its importance. The Divisional Forest Officer Publicity Division Shimla Mr. Sanjay Sharma said that wildlife Week is celebrated in first week of October with the aim to spread awareness among people on conservation of wildlife and encourage them to protect the wildlife and their habitat.
Himachal Pradesh has a unique distinction of bringing about 15 percent of the total geographical area of the State under protected area network against national average of 4.7 percent. Effective wild life conservation is being ensured through 26 Wild Life Sanctuaries and 5 National Parks and 3 conservation reserves in the State. The wildlife wing of Himachal Forest Department is celebrating wildlife week to create awareness among school /college children and people on the protection of wildlife and its importance for the survival of human beings.
Many programmes have been planned by the wildlife wing during this wildlife week celebration. These includes trekking in and around protected areas. A group of 40 children( both girls and boys) including teachers from schools will be taken for one day trekking and concerned forest officer will acquaint them with local flora and fauna. There would be 8 treks in each Shimla circle and Dharamshala circle and 9 treks in shamshi circle. During trekking essay competition based on wildlife conservation will also be conducted.
Minimum 10 School Functions events like painting, quiz competition, skit competition, debate, photography competition etc. per Wildlife division in different School in HP will be organized. The, Wildlife Film Screening shall be done one day each at Shimla, Kufri, Manali and Dharamshala.State Level Painting Contest on the Man and Wild Animal Co-existence for Primary Section (1 st to 5 th ), slogan writing contest (Hindi & English) for middle section ( 6 th to 8 th ) and essay writing contest for higher Section (9 th to 12 th ) students of school in Himachal Pradesh would be held during wildlife week celebration.
Bird Race at district headquarters would be held at all district headquarters by involving local schools children. DFO Wildlife concerned will organize this activity in co-ordination with the concerned territorial DFOs. Besides these activities during wildlife week a State Level Function shall be organized in Shimla during 2nd week of October. Wildlife week souvenir will be brought out and wildlife enthusiasts are being requested via e-mails to contribute articles on Man and Wild Animal co-existence.
