Shimla: WWF-India’s Shimla field office in collaboration with Municipal Corporation, Shimla, Inner Wheel Club and Rotary Club organised Earth Hour-2010 on March 27. On this occasion, Mayor Madhu Sood was the chief guest.
Lights at the Town Hall and the church on the Ridge were switched off between 8:30 to 9:30 PM as part of the event. Local peoples and tourists showed great interest in the campaign by signing the Earth Hour banner. Mayor Madhu Sood said the Earth Hour would go a long way in spreading awareness about judicial use of energy and environment conservation. Vandana Thaplyal, state director, WWF-India; Bhupinder Chauhan, WWF- India; Geetika Sood, president, Inner Wheel Club, Shimla; Atul Tangri, president, Rotary Club Shimla and Parikshit from Rotary Club were present for on Earth Hour.
Earlier, Earth Hour signature campaign was launched by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal at his residence on March 21. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for one hour to make their stand against climate change.
