Census operation in Himachal from April 7

Shimla: Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal today announced that 2011 Census would begin on April 7, 2010, and the first phase would be completed within 45 days.

He said the Census would be completed in two phases and in first phase enumeration and enlistment of houses work would be completed, while in the second phase Census work would be undertaken. He said that this time the National Census Register was an important document to be prepared during the Census operation. The Census of 2011 happens to be the 7th after independence and 15th since the exercise began way back in 1872.

The Chief Minister said enumeration and enlistment of households in lower areas would be carried in the first phase during April 7 to May 22, 2010, while in snow-bound areas, Pangi sub-division of district Chamba, Multhan sub-tehsil of district Kangra, Dodra Kwar sub-division of district Shimla, besides tribal districts of Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, the exercise would be undertaken between June 1 to July 15, 2010. He said that 15,429 enumerators would be deployed from different departments to undertake the exercise who would be imparted training by 338 master trainers to accomplish the task.

Dr C Chandramouli, Registrar General and Commissioner Census Operation of India, said that Census Operation happened to be a national programme undertaken every ten years and the exercise was the biggest one the world.
