Shimla: The queen of hills will voluntarily shed its glitter on March 27 for an hour starting 8.30 pm as it joins a world-wide Earth Hour campaign to spread environmental awareness. In Shimla, the Earth Hour is jointly being organised by WWF-India, Rotary Club and Inner Wheel Club.
To build up momentum for the event, Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal launched the Earth Hour signature campaign at his residence Oak Over on March 21, and signed the banner and gave best wishes to the unique global initiative to spread awareness on climate change and global warming. Vandana Thaplyal, state director WWF-India; Dr Sanjeev Sharma, project officer, WWF- India; Geetika Sood, president, Inner Wheel Club, Shimla; Atul Tangri, president, Rotary Club, Shimla and Parikshit from Rotary Club were also present for the signature campaign.
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating.
Films are being screened and presentation given in schools to spread the message. IEC material on Earth Hour, global warming, climate change is also being distributed. GSSS Beolia, GSSS Lalpani, GSSS Chotta Shimla, Monal Public School, GSSS Phagli, GSSS Boileauganj, St. Thomas School, GSSS Dhalli, GSSS Bhattakuffar, GSSS Lakkar Bazar, Dayanand Public School, Bishop Cotton School, S.D. Sr. Secondary School, DAV Lakkar Bazar, DAV New Shimla, St. Bedes College, Convent of Jesus Marry, DAV, New Shimla are participating actively in the campaign.
On 19th March, a painting competition on global warming was organised for school children of Shimla, in collaboration with Inner wheel Club and Rotary Club Shimla.
It is encouraging to see that my ALMA MATER is participating in this campaign too. It is an impetus for us St Bede’s Alumnus to become aware of the initiative too, where ever we are globally present, and do our respective parts.
