Army men in Himachal brace up to meet Chennai like disaster


To meet spree like Chennai in this hill state Indian Armed forces conducted a disaster management exercises involving civilians in 2 days mock drill, designed especially to rescue disaster-affected people of the mountain region. School children, college students along with the civil defence and Home guard personals also joined the exercise.

“It has become important to prepare the army men for such natural disasters in hill states like Himachal Pradesh. After the recent Chennai floods it becomes important to educate and prepare civilians to face the challenges of any kind of natural disasters. This is a quarterly exercise conducted by Indian Army as a part of natural calamities preparedness,” said Colonel Gagandeep, Deputy Commander of the mock exercise.

The Army men of the Jatogh Infantry battalion executed the helicopter rescue operations here in helicopter of Indian Air force, showing their skills and gallant to carry out the management of disaster in critical times.

Indian army men, representatives of local administration, police and doctors and officials of department of health assembled at Annandale ground at Shimla to carry out the mock exercise which will last for 2 days.

The North Indian hill state of Himachal Pradesh is a quake, flood and snow disaster prone state. Most region of the state falls in seismic zone 4 and 5, considered highly sensitive for earthquakes.  Floods in rainy season and snow disaster in winters are common in the state, inviting preparedness for the army and the civilians dealing in disasters.
