The state witnessed death of 584 people and 1035 others got injured in 589 road accidents that took place in various roads including National Highways and State Highways in Una district of Himachal Pradesh from April 10, 2013 to July 31, 2015.
Chief Minister Sh. Virbhadra Singh informed this in the house while replying to a question raised by Kutlehar MLA Sh. Virender Kanwar.
A compensation of Rs. 2.53 crore was disbursed among the victims and their families. The Chief Minister said that in most of the cases negligence of drivers was the reason of the mishaps and in some cases it was due to mechanical failure, over speed or lack of experience among the drivers coming from outer states driving in the hilly terrains.
The roads in Una, said the Chief Minister, were in better conditions than the rest of the state and various steps had been taken to curb the number of accidents which include awareness programs, strengthening of traffic wing, imposition of fining on violating the rules and installation of vehicle tracking system had also been proposed.
BJP Legislators today demanded vehicle tracking system to avert road mishap in this hill state taking heavy loss of life and property owning to harsh road conditions.
