Horticulture training for prisoners in Dharamshala

In order to bring prisoners convicted under various crimes lodged in district jail Dharamshala to mainstream, Department of Prison’s in collaboration with Department of Horticulture is training inmates so they could adopt vocation of producing fruits and vegetables after becoming free from here.

“We have decided to improve the life styles of estranged convicted inmates so that when they go out from this prison can easily adopt the mainstream of life” said Superintendent of Open and District Jail at Dharamshala Mr. Susheel Kumar Thakur.

We are training them to cultivate flowers and vegetables in vitro poly house inside the open prison here and production of trainee inmates is being credited to their bank account .

The prisoners were being provided opportunity inside the jail so they could learn the skills and techniques of producing vegetables and fruits. Polyhouses have been built up in 250 square meter area inside the jail in collaboration with Horticulture department .

Mr. Thakur said that it will not only hone their vocational skills but improve their economic conditions. One can support his family applying the same scheme after becoming free from the punishment. He said that most of prisoners have shown their interest for this move by the authorities. This is a new experience for the authorities as well. Similar project can be rolled out in other prisons of the country.
