Shimla: Opposition leader Vidya Stokes today termed the Governor’s address presented in the state assembly on March 2 as hollow and away from the ground realities. Participating on the debate over Governor’s address, Stokes said that 48 lakh farmers of state, who depend on agriculture and horticulture, are facing adverse weather conditions besides bearing repeated failure of crops due to dry spells in the state.

Alleging government’s failure to tackle agrarian crisis in the state, Stokes said peasants are not getting pesticides, fertilizers and seeds timely, aggravating the problems. Terming the policies of state government as anti-farmer, she said concerned peasantry class is only depending on the policies of Union government. She alleged that the state government has also failed to provide fodder to farmers in view of the dry spell in the state.

Exhorting the ‘Doodh Ganga’ scheme launched recently, the Opposition leader said that nothing substantial is being done. She charged that neither quality yielding cow breeds were being provided, nor fodder has been made available to beneficiaries under this scheme. Raising the issue of increasing unemployment in the state, she said that the state government should take effective steps to take care of this problem. Demanding implementation of the 85th amendment for the welfare of schedule castes and tribes, she said the state government is not doing anything for weaker sections in the state as there is wide difference between what is said and done by the state government.

Opposing the BJP members for patting the back of its government on the name of getting various national awards in the name of development, Stokes called it a ‘drama’ reasoning that the credit goes to the previous government. She said that congress would lodge protest against allowing number of universities in the state, which are rendering large number of farmer landless besides leaving the owners of land as mere watchmen on their pieces of own land.
