Una: Led by Una district committee of Himachal Kisan Sabha, more than 1,000 farmers from Beet area participated in a massive demonstration against the alleged inept functioning of the state government and the district administration in “rescuing them from incessant attacks from wild animals, especially blue bulls’’. The protest demonstration was led by the leaders of the Kisan Sabha including Kuldip Singh Tanwar, Tikender Panwar, Vijay Sharma, Ravinder Joshi, KK Rana, and several other local leaders. Later, a memorandum addressed to the chief minister was also submitted to the deputy commissioner.

Earlier, a massive campaign was launched in the entire district in which 18 panchayats were covered. This campaign was led by Ravinder Joshi and Vijay Sharma, leaders of the Himachal Kisan Sabha. The HKS stated the problem of blue bulls is a real one and has affected a vast area of Una district. “The menace of blue bulls has also cost many night riders with their lives as the jump of the animal is sufficient to kill the rider. More than a dozen people have died because of this. The peasantry is forced either to not to sow any crop because of which large tracts of land is left barren or have to keep a vigil 24 hours to protect the sown crop. Even the cropping pattern has changed in the area,” a release stated.

The HKS has demanded that permission be granted to peasants to kill these blue bulls. The government must also take up the matter with the central government so that the overnight duty that the peasants are forced to perform for protecting crops can be taken up under NREGA. The HKS has decided to hold another meeting of “shooters” on April 11, at Dulehar that would proceed to voluntarily kill wild beast that destroy the livelihood of the peasants.
