Shimla: The Shimla municipal corporation on Friday proposes to spend a large chunk of its funds on beautification, street lighting and stretching the road infrastructure in the ensuing financial year. With these targets in mind, Mayor Madhu Sood presented a budget of Rs 160 crore for the next financial year. The last year’s budget was for Rs 43 crore.

The budget was presented amid walkout by BJP councillors, local MLA Suresh Bhadwaj and the two CPIM councillors over the issue of banning media entry into the Town Hall during special house meeting of the municipal corporation for the budget session.

Earlier during the a special house conducted for proposing a hike in water charges, the entry of media was banned after a special resolution at the behest of the Mayor. The budget was presented in presence of 15 Congress councillors only.

The budget shows that despite proposals of Rs 160 crore, MC will have to depend on the state government for funds as there are no fresh proposals of resource mobilization and the MC does not have any resources at hand to take up development schemes.
Last year the MC had managed to get a grant-in-aid of Rs 20 crore from the state government.
