Shimla: Shimla municipality on Wednesday proposed 60 percent hike in charges for drinking water by raising the cost by Rs 2.58 per kiloliter. This would affect three lakh consumers in the town. Presently, the cost of MC-supplied water in the city is Rs 4.24 per kiloliter. A special meeting of the MC house, presided over by mayor Madhu Sood, was convened specially to discuss proposals on hiking charge for various services provided by it.

Assistant commissioner KK Sharma told media persons that MC has to pay a liability of Rs 70 crore to the IPH department, and was therefore giving a subsidy of 76 percent on water charges, which was causing a lot of burden to the civic body.
