HC seeks status of under trail prisoners in state jail

Himachal Pradesh High Court today issued a notice to state government on  issue of under-trial prisoners lodged in the jails for long time and directed to file status report within four weeks.

A Division Bench comprising the Chief Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir and Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan passed these orders on a petition taken up as PIL directing Chief Secretary, Secretary (Home), Director General of Police and Director General of Prisons, Himachal Pradesh to submit the reports about the status of under trail prisoners in the jail.

The Supreme Court while hearing Public Interest Litigation had directed all the High Courts to examine the issue touching the rights of the under-trial prisoners especially the females and the children with them and the rights of the mentally challenged under-trials and convicts and issue appropriate directions.

The Supreme Court had also directed to examine the rights of people suffering from mental disability, who are involved in any crime and are still suffering harassment, neglect or deprivation at the hands of their family or are seen roaming about in public places without anyone taking responsibility for their care, protection or maintenance.
