17 die 26 injured in bus accident : Himachal Pradesh

As many as 17 passengers were killed and 26 other were injured when a private bus plunged into Baspa river this morning at Rutrunaga place at Kupa area along Indo-China border in Kinnaur district in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, about 230 kms far from Shimla town.

SP Kinnaur Mr. Rahul Nath confirmed that 14 bodies have been brought in the hospital for autopsy, 26 injured have been rushed to Sangla and Reckong Peo hospital and three critical passengers has been airlifted to IGMC.

He said that ill-fated private bus (HP 25A-1734) on route to Reckong Peo from Sangla valley plunged into Baspa river tributary of Satluj at 1030 hours this morning at Rutrunaga place near Kupa area, 8 km from Sangla on Thursday afternoon.

The private bus having 43 passengers on board plunged on the bank of Baspa and all the injured have been evacuated and rushed to hospital.

Mr. Nath said that bodies of 17 deceased passengers have been traced from the wreckage while four others are traced inside it were to be handed over to the relatives after conducting autopsy at Reckong Peo. Most of the deceased were local people.

Earlier rescue operation swag into this mishap and it was conducted in presence of Deputy Commissioner Mr. D.D. Sharma. Mr. Nath said that cause of mishap is yet to ascertained.

Remote tribal Kinnaur district, bordering China, is known for its treacherous roads and steep mountains.

Road accidents are common in Himachal Pradesh, due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles. On average more than 1000 people are killed in the state in the road accidents each year.
