38 pilgrims injured in road mishap : Himachal Pradesh

Thirty eight pilgrims were injured and five of them were seriously injured when a tempo in which they were travelling overturned at Hanuman Mandir curve at Dhaliara falling under Dehra Police station on Monday.

Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Dehra B.D. Bhatia said that a tempo (PB 08-R 9694) carrying pilgrims from Ajnala Punjab, who were on way to Dehra after paying obeisance at Chintpurni temple, overturned at Hanuman Mandir curve near DG Hotel leaving 38 pilgrims injured. Police handout however put the number of injured as forty.

Bhatia said that five of the pilgrims were seriously injured and were referred to DRPGM College at Tanda. He said that a tempo carrying pilgrims, violating the traffic norms, overturned due to rash and negligent driving of the driver Chinder Singh. He said that the tempo hit against a private bus HP 36 4799 coming from opposite direction before it overturned, however, no bus passenger was injured in the accident.

SDPO said that injured were rushed to Community Health Center Dehra and five seriously injured with fractures were referred to TMC Kangra by doctors at Dehra.

The five seriously injured pilgrims were identified as Lal Singh (20), Avtar Singh, (15), Gurdeep Singh (28), Jagtar Singh (17) and Shinder Singh (20), all residents of Ajnala Punjab.

Police registered a case under section 279 and 337 IPC and 19 A of the MV Act against the erring tempo driver who was also injured in the accident.

SDPO said that police from July 26 had initiated an awareness campaign among pilgrims that they should not violate the traffic norm on one side, and on the other side during the last ten days 264 vehicles were challenged which included 113 tempos carrying pilgrims and Rs. 2,12,800 was recovered from them as fine.
