Earthquake tremor in Himachal Pradesh

Moderate intensity tremors were felt in parts of Himachal Pradesh last evening at 1919 hours, Indian Meteorological Department said.

IMD in charge at Shimla Manmohan Singh told that tremors hit border areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir at 1919 hours. It was measured 5  magnitude on the Richter scale. The Epicenter of earthquake was located at latitude 32.9 degrees North and longitude 78.4 degrees East in the hills of Chamba borders of Himachal along Jammu and Kashmir.

Report received from Chamba town said that people experienced the tremor for few seconds, however no loss of life and property was reported in the town and other parts of the district. The eyewitness said that the tremors were also felt in parts of Shimla, Kullu and Kangra district.

Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur and some parts of Shimla district fall in the line of high seismic zone of schedule IV. 1907 earthquake was the deadliest earthquake in the history during last 100 years which measured 7.8 magnitude that took  life of around 20,000 people and also demolished most of the human habitations and landmarks in Kangra valley.

Meteorologists feels that 8 magnitude earthquake may hit highly seismic zone of Himachal Pradesh for which epicenter could be located around Sundernagar of  Mandi district as they had conducted survey of the earthquake in the state recently. Geologist are of opinion that very high intensity earthquake may hit after every hundred years in the North Western Himalayan ranges it we compare it with 1907 earthquake of Kangra and past.
