Manali-Leh road completely open for vehicular traffic

Manali-Leh road was thrown open to vehicular traffic today. About 530 km Manali-Leh highway remained off due to snow from Nov 11, 2013 onwards, BRO commending officer Anthony Selva Kumar informed.

Earlier BRO had laid target to open this road by May 15,2013 but due to inclement weather and fresh snowfall on the Barlacha and Tanglangla passes, road took more time to open for vehicular traffic.

The highway was cleared by BRO at Rohtang Pass between Manali and Keylong on April 26, 2013. This road remained off for vehicular traffic for more than five months due to winter snowfall every year.

The supply of armed forces was also resumed with opening of this road to Leh as forces were earlier airlifting their supply from Chandimandir. India share long range of International border with China in the Leh Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, meanwhile, Manali-Leh road is considered as shortest terrestrial.

The Indian agencies were much concerned due to delay in opening of this road after recent tension between India and China.
