Seeking stringent legislation to deal sternly against the perpetrators of sexual harassment, CPI(M) frontal organizations made a ‘human chain’ and also took oath to resist against such crimes in public places to protect the victims.
About 200 activists comprising of AIDWA,DYFI and SFI constituted a ‘human chain’ at the historical Ridge ground, Shimla, yesterday afternoon to strengthen their struggle against the increasing incidents of sexual harassment against women in public places.
While addressing the protesters, state treasure of AIDWA Phalma Chauhan said that existing laws against such crimes are very soft and there is urgent need of strong legislation to deterrent against such heinous crimes. She said that strict provisions should also be enacted in the new legislation against the incidents of eve-teasing against girls and women in public places.
State president of SFI Kapil Bhardwaj said that sex sensitive committee should be constituted in all education institutions. Moreover, women police stations should also be opened on tehsil level to encourage the victims of such crimes to register cases without hesitation during such incidents.
State secretary of DYFI Balbir Prashar said that a signature campaign to enact strong law into sexual harassment and to whip out the shortcomings in the existing mechanism related to sexual harassment shall be started from Tuesday in the state. The signature copy of campaign would also be handed over to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take further action.
